I brought one of my many unfinished shawls with me on my summerholiday, in a hope I would actually knit on it.... I was wrong... but not totaly wrong. I frogged it, just ripped it back, and it felt good ;-).
After all that frogging I startet on a new shawl, and lest cross our fingers and legs and everything else for that this time it might turn into a finished product.

WOW it is over a year since the last update. wellwell, those how know me knows that my head has been occupied by other stuff. However, I am trying to make a comeback.

I am as always having three or more socks on the needles and one of them are made using self striping yarn. However, I realised that they have used two different methods for changing the colours. First method is to have nice fading changes between colours (the reason for buying the yarn) and the second was to just to tie a knot (which was a surprise). Was not to happy about that surprise, but what can I do, I finished the socks and they look nice to wear.

Stove-mitten, one handed, +5 heat resistance

It is amazing, I have finally managed to finish the green baby jacket. It took me over three years to finish the knitting, and an additionally month to get the buttons sewn on. Am I a racer? Obviously not on this project. The kid it was knit for is too big, however there are always a kid in the right size somewhere, so this one will be shipped off to somebody else. Lets hope they will like it and that this one will be used and handed over to other kids until it is not usable anymore. It should be the dream of any knitted kid-garment.

I redid a pattern I found in a 50 year old Burda. And the yarn is green (no idea about the brand anymore)

New mittens! and lovely lovely they are. Yellow! Can newer really get enough of that colour. It is just a pitty I look pale as a corps when wearing anything yellow. But mittens are a good alternative. They do not need to be worn close to the face ;-)
These mittens are really easy to make:
For female hand:
yarn: Rauma finull or PT2
needles: 7 mm

cast on 40, knit 40 rounds, put 8 stitches on a scrap yarn, make 8 new stiches on the next round, knitt 38 rounds and decrease stiches evenly on the next 12 rounds leaving only about 6 stiches, break yarn and thread through the remaining stiches. Make the other mitten.
thumb: Take up the eight stiches from the scrap yarn, take up 12 stiches making 20 stiches. knit for 14 rounds, decreas stiches to around 6 on the next 6 rounds.

Felt in a machine or by hand :-D

I can finish projects

It is true I CAN finish projects. However, most times it feels like I only buy yarn and starts multiple projects which now are hiding under the sofa, in the sofa, and in various boxes. It is nice to finally finish something.

The blue is my pirate dress for a little princess. Made after Tora Frøseth's "Little sister dress". It is made inGarnstudio DROPS Muskat (Yes, it is cotton...)

The hat is already in use, and I love it, it is slightly to cold for it at the moment... it will change ;-)
The hat is made after the patter "Clione" by A black pepper designs in Malabrigo worsted. I really like the feel of Malabrigo, but time will tell if it can handle hard wear and tear.

Well, it isn't as bad as is sounds like, it is more a half voluntarily "I am going to finish my UFOs and knit those projects that I have bought yarn for!"

My yarn diet did start very successfully; I finished my first UFO, the Jenny Chloche. Nice, warm, down under the ears, grey Eskimo yarn. Winter can come, I am ready!!

How can one not? With the woods filled with mushrooms and berries? This year I have even tried the scary scary sport of mushroom picking. Until now I have know three different edible species, and this year I learned one more!! However I did pick some that I do not even remember the name of, or remember how to distinguish, but don’t be alarmed I had with me a knowledgeable Finn that approved my mushrooms before I picked them, and told me in detail how to prepare them.

Hihi, it is quite fun how one in the rest of the year is fussing about eating into the stored food supply in the freezer. While every autumn one is hoarding without thought to fill it up. And I admit it, I have not eaten all I picked last year……

Finger monsters are easy little crochet projects I used to do quite a few of before. They are fun to make since you start out with an idea and a choice of yarn and it most often ends up something totally different. This one was supposed to be a bear and ended up more a rat... not the biggest difference. I had once one starting out as a fox and became a demonspawn...

Monster in my pocket, lovely monster in my pocket. Protect my itouch for ever and ever!

Freecrocheted my monster yesterday, think it took only three hours from idea to birth. And out came a lovely toothed grey monster.

“Freecrocheting”, it might be my own made up word. But I lack a good word for when you just start and let the project shape itself. Maybe “free handed” or “crochet based on imagination and sheer luck” are more proper terms, but I like freecroheting, it sounds better in my ears. I will anyway start using my word. Freecrocheting, AH, it sounds just right and very fun.

About the pattern, as said it is freecrocheted so I am not all sure about what I did. Started at the bottom with 14 ch, took up 14 stiches on both side (28 stiches in total), worked sc around to preferred length. Took in one stich on each side of opening to make it narrower so the ipod does not slip out. The ears were made as I croheted around, (ears ; 5 ch, 1 ch in 2nd from hook, 1sc, 1hdc, 1 dc. sc back in the body), after the second ear I made the head (closing flap) by sc back and forth taking in stiches at the edges. My monster has 10 rounds on the head. Teeth were made as the ears, just with thinner yarn.

In a couple of days I hope it has gotten a name and that it might have revealed its sex… I am anxious.

Striped Felted Hat

This is the BEST pattern EVER for a felted warm and cosy hat, and it looks good! Knitted in PT2 it is monster sized before felted (before and after pictures below), and felting is as always nerve wrecking. I do not know where this pattern is from, it came in a pattern book, but it was lost, luckily after someone had written it down. I believe that nearly all of my friends from university have one or more hats from this pattern.

For me this is my fourth. I only have the first one myself, and I wish to make a new one and throw my old one away, buuut, NO. Not keeping this one either. This particular one is going onto a mans head out on a oilrig somewhere in the North sea. I hope it meets his satisfaction.

I tried to make a evil stare, but I failed. However, that might be fine, I do not have it in me to rob a bank.

Anyway, I love my new neck gaiter/ neck warmer/ cowl or whatever these things are called in English. I finished it just in time for my trip up to the freezing north. So this is one happy girl that has no plans for cold necks.

It is made from a free pattern I found at Ravelry, I used needles size 4.5, triple yarn of alpakka (2 black and 1 greenish), and 120 stitches.

Yarn is Viking sportsragg (love viking sprotsragg) and opal in colour “melon”. I am quite happy about the colours and finally I found a good project for my opal, happy every time I get to use some of the yarn that is bought and stashed (yes, my stash is huge, even though I am hiding half of it)

Unfortunately, I believe these socks soon will join the family of Ings pile of UFOs..

Skiing mittens

Finally my new skiing mittens are finished! They are so thick and deliciously warm. Can’t wait to try them on an actual skiing trip. Normally that wouldn’t have been a problem, but somehow I have bewildered myself down south in Norway. Didn’t even bring my skis, which I don’t regret since the “snow” down here is barely covering the ground. I am hoping for better snow for Christmas when I go west towards the coast. To the traitorous coast that never promises anything regarding the weather, but it is Christmas and I know that there has been white Christmases there before, I will keep my fingers crossed.

Back to the mittens, they are knit on dp-sock needles size 3.0 mm, in Per Gynt (Sandnes Garn). Can’t wait until they have been felted due to use and get that bended fit perfectly to your hand state.

I definitely love winter, skiing, snow, warm knitting, shovelling snow (oki, I don’t really do that, my landlord does it..).

and what better way to celebrate winter than getting the best boots ever?

or the nicest cosy homemade indoor shoes to put on after a day outside? Nearly ballerina style!

These are made with Hifa sock yarn on needles 2.5 mm. The pattern is from one of Ripped's many knitting books. The book describes them as left over yarn project, but you need about 75-100 g heavy sock yarn of the main colour, maybe it is the pattern that make them left over project... I am not sure. They are just lovely!

I am on vacation at my grandmother and grandfathers house down south where life is easy and warm. Of course I have with me my knitting, four projects to be exact. One of these being the now finished aphid mittens (which I will come back to with more detailed pictures later). Since I am then one project down I went shopping.

Found the yarn I wanted, knew what I wanted to knit, but didn’t have a pattern. Easely solved by the local library with its treasure of knitting books. (I LOVE librarys!!!!11!!).

Life seemed so easy, and that is when my problems (and revelations) came. I wanted a pattern for a baby jacket with needles 3,0 and yarn for 26 st = 10 cm. Didn’t find any, so I chose the one that maybe was the most matching one (and illustrated with a crying baby) and in my mind thought “ If I knit with a thicker yarn and the right needles for that yarn, I should choose a size smaller than what I want to end up with as finished product.” It still sounds perfectly logical in my mind. But reality didn’t want this to be true. I started with an arm (at least I have learned to start with the arms after a lifetime never knitting one single trial patch) and realized that there is something wrong here. The arm ended up wider than it was long. Ripped it, skipped the increase except three stitches (I do not know why not four, I guess I didn’t pay to close enough attention when I ripped the arm, the second one is anyway similar). That worked so much better, I have now started on the body, and it looks promising. No I have not checked if my pattern will fit in the end, I guess it will work itself….

Anyway,

What I wanted to tell about was my grandmothers knitting basket, I realized while asking to lend some needles that I have never looked inside my grandmothers knitting basket. Which is a shame, one should always know how ones grandmothers knitting equipment looks like, I have full summary in my mind at anytime for what can be found in my mothers slightly chaotic knitting equipment.

I immediately started smiling while thaking the lid of this great basked, it is definitely designed to be a knitting basket with lining with pockets and what not, a perfect place for an organizer. All I see is chaos! I am so proud; there is not one organized knitter in my family! Whooohooo!

Find needle 3,0 40 cm. No the needle measurer is nowhere to be found, nor the tape measurer .

There is one thing still on my mind though; is a pattern “yours” (or your design) if only the number of cast on stitches originates from the chosen pattern?

Aphid mittens

I am proud today!

I have knitted my first Aphid mitten, they are a birthday present to my mother. I design everything myself! The inspiration came from a library book about Sámi knitting traditions. I must admit that the finished product does not at all resemble the muse mitten, but I do not care. The library is such a good place to go for inspiration.

Oki, so why on earth choose aphids? I believe they are one of the most wanted when it comes to gardens. And my mother is definitely a keen gardener, but to my defence she has never gotten in to roses, she rather loves wild flowers and vegetables.

Anyway I think aphids deserve some admiration and respect. If one read a little about them they are fantastic and interesting. There are about 4000 different species of aphids, and in spring and summer there only exists females. Breeding by cloning, giving birth to live clones! It is first in autumn that they start producing sexual mature males and females, triggered by temperature, these mate and the females lays eggs which overwinter and hatches as females the next year. Come on admit it, aphids are cool.

Back to the mittens. The aphids are not finished I still need to sew antennas and the recognisable "spikes" at the back. I had planed to make a ladybug on the front of the hand, but that would have just been too much, so I made a small bird on the thumb instead. At least one predator on them ;-)

I also want to highlight the cuff, I so enjoy the windy part. I am sorry I have no clue on the name of this technique, I found it in the Sámi knitting book. Basically you purl with alternating red and grey winding the yarn the same way always as one knits. Yes, one do get a BIG mess of yarn with this knitting. But it looks great doesn’t it? It is worth the frustration, believe me.

My kingdom is clean, cleaner than it has ever been before. Even the monster dish pile has vanished in the hands of my personal washing machine. I paid her with pancakes afterwards so I hope she is happy.

Norway

is a strange and unfair country. While the south has + 27 ⁰C sun, bathing temperatures and spotless skies, it is snowing in the north, the kind of snow that you would like to see at Christmas Eve, not 11 May.

The picture is my view from my living room. Can't really see it but it is snowing nearly heavy. I am not the happiest person regarding the weather you could find up north. Honestly I am not sure you can find one person up here that is happy with the weather.

But my house is filled with crafty knitters, sock knitters to be correct. And with that in mind, how many pair of socks could two sock knitters knit on?

Add one pair (yes, I have a knitting project in my office) and this adds up to?

Three of the socks on the picture are mine, the rest (the two blue and the skull pair) belongs to skumle. She is at the moment my substitute wife (making me dinner, desert and coffee) and getting me back into knitting mode.

Honestly, I don’t need more meat. I do believe I have enough.
The weekend activity this time was to cut up my newly bought reindeer calf. And since I rent and do not have any outdoor facilities, this happened on my living room table. It wasn’t to messy, it was half frozen. And most importantly I had a friend (that knows how to do this) on MSN explaining to me what I had to do. Yes, my computer still has blood on it. Anyway I am really content with the results, everything managed to fit into my freezer (HURRA).
The lesson for next time… I need a course in butchering… It is fun to figure things out oneself, but this is meat, it is precious, it needs to be done right!

Yes, look what I found! okioki it is one of the neglected projects..

I even found most of the planed pattern! not bad not bad, but I also remembered why I left them unknitted (and stole the needles to another project). I did some wrong in the calculations for the pattern... Easypeasy thing to do! Anyway, the pattern is recalulated, tried and is fitting. Yes it is going to be nice skulls on them! oooh it is supposed to end up as mittens.

Knitting info:

Knitted on dpn 2.5 mm, 70 stiches, with Rauma finull which is a 2-ply wool yarn á 50 g = ca. 175 m. Gauge 26 stiches = 10 cm on dpn 3.o mm

I got a needle case from Ripped, she made it herself, an it is so nice with skulls and black and green, it is perfect an I thought it is so big “I will never manage to fill it”. Oh how naïve of me….

I started sorting my needles yesterday. Earlier I used this old leather case bought from an armyleftoversale, but none has ever managed to tell me what it might have been used for. It has straps on the back so one can fit it on a belt or a backpack. Anyway, it has been really good for my needles, hooks and darning needles.

But back to the new needle case…. Oki I realized quite quickly that my idea about my knitting needles did not match reality. I have a lot of them, many many more than I thought, and also (not really surprising) an odd number of quite many of them…. Like 6 dpn 17 cm long size 2.5, why 6? Or my one dpn 22 cm long size 2.0. Or why do I have 15 dpn 22 cm long size 6.0? But the worst is that I have a lot of forgotten (read ignored) and ongoing projects with needles on them. And this new needle case has no more space.

I did not like this revelation of my needle stash… maybe I should just go back to my old system of total chaos in the leather case and try really really hard to forget about this experience. I guess I can find the use for the nice skull needle case for something else. So thank you Ripped for a lovely needle case and DAMN YOU for making me realize how much needles I have *may your stash forever be untidy*

Don’t leave your Dragon in charge of your apartment, this might happen:

It is the biggest pile of dirty dishes I have ever seen, and it is so big it even hides all the other dirty stuff....

Can’t believe it! It looks like he has had a party, without me (!), how rude. Not only rude, he hasn’t cleaned, he hasn’t done the dishes, he hasn’t done SHIT, only partied… without me *sob* andIlikepartyingIamsadhepartiedwithoutme *sob* !!! Well I will find a way to get even, it might take some while, but you know, a girl doesn’t forget a disappointment. In a way we (girls) are like elephants (without the tail, the trunk, and some of the weight) we might forget our keys and other essential belongings, and think that it is the color that makes the car cool (I want a yellow one),k BUT we will never forget when someone disappoint us. I am not sure this is a good thing, maybe more the contrary. Anyway elephants are cool, with their nasty little eyes and huge tusks, a bit like walruses… and walruses are superbeings. No one else in this world has understood what the walruses know. They have solved the mystery of life. It is al about eating, laying in huge huddles, preferably on top of all the others, fart and belch as much as one can, and just not care about smells. If there is something as incarnation I want to come back as a walrus.

Oh, but some knitting. I have blocked a piece of knitted goods, my double knitted star "bordskåner".

My “bordskåner” is now rectangular and flat and nice looking. And it works:

Double knitting

I have finally discovered the amazing technique of double knitting. Found it on the internet by sheer coincidence, I was actually trying to find a nice star pattern (because nice star patterns aren’t that easy to make yourself or find) when I stumble across this scarf. I didn’t really think about it that time, just “stole” the pattern for a headwear (which will be finished if I start knitting on it again). Some days later I realised that I didn’t really understand how she had knitted that scarf, googled the page, and was amazed! A technique I didn’t know (wow, jeah!)!! HURRA!! I’m gonna learn something new!! Double knitting, never heard about it before, but it is marvellous! Not knitting around, not having to stitch together after making two replicates, no dragging and tugging on the yarn from the knitting around. And both sides being knit at the same time with alternating colours. I'm already in love with a knitting I have not tried.

So, one evening I read her blog throughout, and she actually states that gauge doesn’t matter (love her). I must admit I am no fan of gauge patches, and I don’t think I have ever made any… Works for me, whatever works for you works for you.

I started my scarf during an extremely boring lecture at university, something about ethics... boooring booring ;-). It is such a fun knitting, you get totally amazed by it, and sitting besides a fellow knitter I believe I disturbed the lecture for both of us (don’t think she minded either). Anyway, this tryout ended in a “bordskåner” (can’t find the English translation for this word, but it is the thingy you put on your table to have hot pans on it “tableprotector?”). It's the most punk rock "bordskåner" I have seen.

Since it turned out so nice I have started on a new scarf that is going to end up as a scarf i (not a new “bordskåner”)

I'm knitting on needles 7,0 mm and using Vikings Toppgarn (14 stiches = 10 cm and 50 g = 55 m, according to the yarnbelt) The bordskåner was knit with the same yarn, but on needle size 4,0 mm

My STASH

AAAAhhh after being away for a long time it is soo nice to be back to my STASH, my lovely lovely, oooh soo unorganized, stash. And seeing how a librarian can categorize yarn (it is truly amazing) I have understood that there is time for a change.

I need something more than a banana-box! But it is not that easy, finding boxes that are good enough for my precious yarn? Uhuh *shaking my head* They need to be perfect, preferably black, have a lid and be able to stack. I thought IKEA would be the place, and it could have been but they were all sold out for the one I had in mind. So I still only have my overfilled pouring over the sides banana-box.

Just so you don’t think there is only chaos in my stash (just merely) the biggest basket is only for sock yarn and socks that need mending.

And writing about socks, here is the newest finished socks. I just call them sugarsweetpinksocks. Hehehe, they became a present ;-D There is a girl (woman ??) that finally has gotten something pink into her life (about time if you ask me). You don’t need to be six to like pink, even though that is a phenomenon that all girls at the age of six is extremely into pink. Even I was….*shiver*

Stitchmarkers, I finally found out that I needed them, and also that the world around me could use some. And since the once you can buy at stores are booooring rubbery rings, and those I have seen on the internet is sugary sweet, I made my own. And of course some are skulls.

These are shown on a needle I found in the cupboard of my fathers, might be a 4.5 mm or 5.0 mm. All pearls/skulls were bought at Perlehuset. I made their loop big because all sweaters I have knitted until now have been knitted on 5.0 mm to 7.0 mm needles.

Yes, I'm drinking beer.

Welcome sweetsweet girl to this wonderful world, after tormenting your mother for such a long time. Welcome and thanks for making this such a opportunity for us to make cake, eat cake, forage cake and overfeed in cake. We cheer you in cake and hope you turn out to be a good feminist.

Chicken, Skumle and Ings loves chocolatecake with "seigedamer", and we will gobble it all up. I already feel sorry for Skumle, Chicken and myself for the bad tummies we are going to have this night.

And since there is a new baby in town someone (me) has to start knitting something baby sized, but I have no ide of what it is going to be, maybe a lobsterhat?

Angels and flea marked

My work has taken me south to the nice city of Oslo. It is quite nice, + 7 degrees, sun, blue skies, crisp air, totally autumn feeling. Especially nice since I know there is snow and minus degrees and slippery roads at home...

Since I’m in Oslo and Oslo is the city of GOOD flea markets I went for one. And boy was I in for a shock! It was much bigger than I thought it would be, lots and lots of stuff, and lots and lots and lots and lots off people. I came just before they opened and to my surprise there was no queue, everybody was standing spread out on one side of a thin rope. It looked like a race, and it so definitively was a race. Suddenly somebody shouted “OPEN” and everybody just ran, lifted the thin rope and went bananas. I stood there watching them go, it was surreal, Dragon had to shout at me to get me moving with the masses.

I must admit that after living in mid-Norway and now in the north I’m not at all used to this behaviour from other people above age of 5. People didn’t care if you stood in their way, it you did they just pushed you away, and if you stood your ground and maybe pushed a little back they got angry and shouted at you… and if you where holding something you were not sure that no one would snatch it from you… I am amazed. I think I prefer the northern easygoing population.

I didn’t buy anything, except a coffee and a cake which we shared. Cake is one of the beauties of flea markets. They are homemade and cheap, and I have never ever heard of a flea market cake that wasn’t jummy.

So… back to the knitting: ANGELS

I have bought the book Angels by Gerdine Strong, yes Ripped I know you have it, I just got envious and wanted it for myself… It is soooo nice, and at the moment you are north and I am south, can’t sneakpeek in your book then.

At this point I have:

4 wings (non matching)

Looking forward to see whatever angel that gets finished.

Yes! My lana grossa yarn socks are finished! They are so lovelylovely

They are knitted on 2.5 mm dp-needles, and are knitted toe-up acccording to the guidelines given by knitty. The toe is a figure 8 cast on start, but I used 10 stiches instead off 8 according to knitty. I like the more round toe. The heel is a wrap & turn where I did this for 10 stiches before taking up the wrap & turned stiches. I also increased the number off stiches up the leg, so it has now a nice snug fit. I already love them, though I have not worn them yet. So nice colours! (sorry, dont know which colour number it is, I tossed away the yarns ribbon).

Since I now have my camera up and working, here are some more socks I have made earlier.

The black and red ones are knitt from the top and down, and the ribbing is (K3 P1)*, while the greenish andblack striped are made with the same methods as the lana grossa socks. Warm nice socks are needed this year (yes, just as last year) since it is already snowing.

Just look at those naked toes, sneaking into the picture, just longing for those socks!

I’m sick

I do NOT like it. My head is filled with cotton and mucus, with the last one constantly oozing out. My ears are clogged, so I cannot hear properly. My balance-organ keeps telling me that the ground is gently rocking, like if I was on a boat, which I am not, I am in a freaking city, damn you! Balance-organ stop sending messages to my brain, You are screwing my brain.

The worst thing about being sick is that you are not able to do anything, the body does not compute, or at least it is not any longer coordinated. I have tried knitting… but I get a headache, and my tummy feels weird. I have tried to learn my new fabulous digital camera, with Dragon and Chicken looking over my shoulder, but nothing is getting through the filter of cotton and mucus which consider everything to be spam. I want to learn my camera! Dragon and Chicken wants their picture taken. I want to finish my lana grossa socks, and post a picture off them here. But I am lost, cant do it, just because I am sick. Hate it!

Even my bed believes it is a boat…

At the moment the only good thing is that I now possess lots and lots of dates (the edible ones), that Dragon, Chicken and I are feasting over, some happiness is good.

Going going digital

IIIIIkk! I just bought a digital camera! My first one ever and I did it over the internet. The dangers of the internet have begun to reveal themselves to me. Buy things, pay online (don’t see the money change owners) and suddenly there is a present given to you through the post office.

Wow, I made a blog! Me! I how has said that bloging was for other people, have made my own little space in the big universe of internet. I would never believe this day has come. Ah well... if everything goes wrong I will blame it on Dragon and Chicken. They made me do this, they must take the fall (if it ever comes)!

Anyway since this is my knittingblog, oh I know Dragon and Chicken will push their way into it, but let me at least start it as a knittingblog!

This is the sweater I knitted to my cousin’s newborn, he has not given me a picture in return (I am slightly crossed about that, every proud knitter needs a picture of their product in use). It is knitted in leftoveryarn mostly PT2 and is based on a basic child’s sweater I found on the internet, saved on my computer and forgot where I found it. The pattern I made up as I knitted along.
